October 20, 2026After 13 years of building a team, what I keep coming back to is the people who made it worth it.
Read the essay →I’m Matt Mitchell. Husband to Lindsey, dad of three, basketball junkie, and a builder at heart. My family and I call Crown Point, Indiana home.
Faith and family come first. They’re the foundation of who I am and help keep everything else in perspective.
I’ve loved basketball for about as long as I can remember. From Little Tikes hoops in the basement to endless games in the driveway, I couldn’t get enough of it. I was the kid asking for NBA League Pass for Christmas, which probably wasn’t a typical request for a kid my age. I started playing competitively in third grade and kept at it all the way through college.
Like most kids, I dreamed of playing in the NBA. But somewhere around junior high, that dream shifted, and I became more interested in owning a team or working in a front office. Even playing video games, it didn’t matter which sport. I was the guy who’d simulate through the season just to get to the offseason: free agency, trades, scouting, building a roster, and seeing if it could actually win. That side of sports fascinated me just as much as the games themselves.
My path into that world hasn’t exactly been conventional, but The Basketball Tournament (TBT) gave me a way in. For 13 years, I’ve helped build teams, recruit players, and manage relationships, first as Eberlein Drive and now as Davis Steel. In 2026, we finally won the $2 million championship. As rewarding as that was, the best part has always been the people, and some of my closest friendships have come through the game.

Beyond TBT, I’ve stayed involved in sports through The Soccer Tournament (TST) and now coaching my sons, which has been an absolute blast. Professionally, I’ve worn a few different hats. From trying to disrupt the healthcare industry to co-founding a sports technology company, I’ve always been drawn to building things, connecting people, and finding opportunities. Some ideas have worked and plenty haven’t, and I’ve made my share of mistakes, learned a lot along the way, and probably spent more time than I should have thinking about the next big idea.
I don’t have it all figured out, but I believe God has a purpose in the people we meet, the opportunities we’re given, and even the doors that don’t open.
